Man arrested after campaign to raise £10,000 to hire hitman to kill Gina Miller

A man has been arrested over an attempt to crowdfund £10,000 to pay for a hitman to kill high profile Remain activist Gina Miller.

The 52-year-old is said to have been behind a GoFundMe page that had been set up to ‘hire a contract killer to kill Gina Miller’ who was labelled a ‘traitor to democracy’.

Officers from Northumbria Police say they have detained a man on suspicion of making malicious communications.

He has been released on bail pending further investigation, the Sunday Mirror reported.

The page, which was set up under the name Jeff Blogger to raise the funds, had been live for six months last year, until police were made aware in October 2019.

Although the page has been since deleted, at the time Gina Miller said: ‘This is horrifying. It beggars belief that this can have been allowed to have been put up on this site and stayed there for so long.’

After the page was revealed, a GoFundMe spokesman said: ‘This campaign has been removed.

‘We are sorry it got through our otherwise robust procedures. We are particularly sorry for any distress this caused Gina Miller.’

Ms Miller came to prominence after leading a high profile campaign in the courts to challenge the government’s Brexit process, with her actions forcing Theresa May to put her withdrawal agreement to a vote in the Commons.

Last year, the Supreme Court also ruled in her favour, after declaring Boris Johnson’s prorogation of Parliament was unlawful.

Her victories in court against the government have led to her facing sexual and racist threats online.
